Smaller Stuff

Billions of objects smaller than planets orbit the Sun.

Where are they found?

Beyond the orbit of Jupiter we encounter the asteroid belt. Near Neptune and beyond, we find the Kuiper belt and the scattered disc. Further still is the Oort cloud, where comets freeze.

Comets

Comets are small bodies made mostly of ices. They have highly elliptical orbits that eventually bring them into the inner Solar System where they heat up and release plumes of gas and dust. Comets are thought to originate in either the Kuiper belt or the Oort cloud.

Asteroids

Asteroids are small rocky bodies of very different sizes and shapes. They range from small rocks about a metre across to dwarf planets over 1000km across.
